I recently returned from a wonderful break in Mexico City, a much-needed adventure filled with vibrant colours, ancient history, and of course, delicious tacos! I didn't just bring back souvenirs; I brought back inspiration, refreshed creativity, and a newfound appreciation for the art of jewelry making.
From Dia de los Muertos to Ancient Jewelry
From the colorful and lively celebrations of Dia de los Muertos to the jewelry pieces I found in local markets and museums, my trip was incredibly bright and full of hue. The intricate designs and vibrant gemstones of the jewelry I saw just made me appreciate my craft even more; it never ceases to amaze me how deep-rooted the desire to create beauty is, even across millennia. Beads, rings, necklaces, you name it, the ancient civilizations of Mexico have made it, and made it beautifully. These pieces carry the fire of creativity within them, and seeing them in person was a privilege.
Tacos, Spanish, and Lovely Locals
But it wasn't all about jewelry! I also indulged in the delicious food of Mexico City, sampling an array of mouth-watering tacos, tostadas, churros and hot chocolate that has left me craving Mexican food since returning to Ottawa. I also took the opportunity to practice my Spanish with the warm and funny local people that I met along the way, which was such a joy. I've been practicing Spanish on and off since learning the basics over 20 years ago on my first solo trip to Ecuador!
Art, Inspiration, and Sparkling Ideas
Exploring the art scene in Mexico City, I was surrounded by creativity at every turn. From colourful street art to modern art in galleries to exploring Frida Khalo's home (now a museum of her work), the city's artistic energy was infectious. I was completely surrounded by beauty and inspiration, and I'm excited to see what new colourful creations this inspo will lead to! I'm so grateful to have had this experience along with some great friends, and would highly recommend Mexico City if you're a lover of vibrant art, delicious food and handcrafted items like I am!
